Can I use an ext. harddisk I got in Japan (100V)& a DVD playa, in the UK (240V) safely/without a converter?
Neither item has a transformer, just a plug for which I can get a 3 prong adapter easily. To get a proper power converter is expensive. Also, cos of the PAL/NTSC conflict will a Japanese DVD player work in the UK anyway? I know already that it plays UK DVDs.

- if it is for 100V you cannot use 240V to power it on, so obvius question!
- If the voltage is set right then you should be fine using a plug adapter. Just make sure that any voltage going into the device is absolutely compatible with what the device requires for voltage. Usually nothing will happen if you have the wrong voltage but if it gets too much voltage you could blow something in the piece of electronics.
The DVD player is a different concept. As far as the video signal, I'm not sure what happens with PAL/NTSC since I have never used PAL. As far as it working, same thing with the voltage being correct. If you get the video to work then you're lucky. Usually the whole thing with PAL and NTSC applies to the media only and not so much to the TV itself. Again I don't know much on PAL NTSC conversion. Usually though new TVs don't have much of a problem with signals of different types.
- no you need a convertor from japanese to uk for the power and if it plays both pal and ntsc then there shouldn't be a problem with that side but get a convertor or our power supply will fry it
- look on the back for a voltage change screw.... please dont use it unless with a correct adapter... it should play fine on uk tv..
- check to see if you have a switch to change voltage from 100 to 220
if not you need a converter
