Which current Optimus Prime toy is the coolest?
I'm getting an Optimus Prime for my 7 year old nephew, because I had one as a kid.

- I personally think, and I'm sure most avid Transformers fans would agree, that the MP-01/MP-04 Convoy ("20th Anniversary Optimus Prime" in the United States) is the coolest Transformers figure available...bar none! However, you're unlikely to find one at a "reasonable" price point because the figure has significantly increased in value since its release. I bought mine for $109.99. It's the attention to detail that the Takara put into the Convoy/Prime figure that sets it apart from other Transformers toys...from any line. First, the figure is big and has numerous points of articulation. More important, it transforms to a flat-front semi truck like the original toy did, not some PeterbiIt-inspired monstrosity like the live-action film version. The toy has several die cast metal parts (a wonderful homage to the original G1 figure). But what really makes the toy special are the accessories. MP-01 Convoy comes with a Matrix of Leadership, an energon ax, Prime's G1 rifle, and a miniature version of Megatron's alternate mode, which Prime used during an episode of the original animated series. Finally, on each arm there are flip-up images of Starscream and Bumblebee, respectively, from the original animated series. This toy practically drips cool. You can get a MP-04 toy from from BigBadToyStore.com for $249.99 and the same toy from ToyWiz.com for $699.99 (egad!).

If you can't afford the above figure, I suggest you hold off for a while and buy your nephew one of the new Prime figures inspired by the Transformers Animated series that now airs on Cartoon Network. They're set to be released in June. He'll probably identify more with this figure anyway. Stay away from the movie figures...they're a blasphemy to the Transformers legacy.
